Waves and Fields in Inhomogeneous Media

Weng Cho Chew

(This book is available in paperback from IEEE Press. It can be ordered from Amazon.com. It was first published in 1990 by Van Nostrand Reinhold. Later it was published by Oxford University Press, and then IEEE Press, 1995.)

The book provides the first comprehensive treatment of wave propogation, radiation and scattering in inhomogeneous media - an entire class of problems once thought too complex before the advent of today's sophisticated numerical computer methods. Covering basic theory at an engineering level, Waves and fields in Inhomogeneous Media emphasises the use of practical, analytical, and numerical computer techniques and mathematical methods and the selection of the best technique for a specific application. Classical analytic methods for one-dimensional inhomogeneity are described while numerical methods or a combination of numerical and analytical methods are presented for two- and three-dimensional problems.

This book offers a thorough treatment of waves in planarly layered media - the most studied of the inhomogeneous media. Blending theory and analytical techniques in relation to their real world engineering applications, coverage builds into the more complicated aspects of problem solving with inhomogeneous media. Key topics include:

  • Waves in cylindrically and spherically layered media.
  • Transient waves, including the Cagniard-de Hoop method.
  • Variational methods for the scalar wave equation and the electtromagnetic wave equation.
  • The mode matching technique.
  • The dyadic Green's function.
  • Integral equation methods.
  • Inverse scattering techniques.

As the first complete volume of its kind, Waves and fields in Inhomogeneous Media will be of enormous value to teachers and researchers in geophysics, optics, nondestructive testing, bio-engineering, imaging and related areas.
